Kanchanpur: The wetlands of Kailali and Kanchanpur districts have become temporary havens for migratory birds escaping the snowfall in the northern hemisphere. As temperatures drop in regions such as Siberia, these birds migrate to Nepal's wetlands in search of food, safe habitats, and suitable nesting grounds.
Hirulal Dagaura, a member of Birds Conservation Nepal, highlighted the diversity of species arriving in the region, including Maalak ducks, green-headed ducks, Kajijure ducks, Suirepuchhre ducks, Kharakhare ducks, Kal ducks, Thulo Jalewa, and Chakhewa, among others.
These wetlands are hosting birds from distant countries such as Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Azerbaijan, providing them with a respite from the severe cold in their native habitats.
Prominent sites attracting migratory birds include Ghodaghodi Taal in Kailali, the Karnali river basin, Puraini Taal, Kalikich wetland, ponds within Shuklaphanta National Park, Rani Taal, Sikari Taal, and areas near the Mahakali and Chaudhar river basins.
The influx of migratory birds underscores the ecological significance of these wetlands and the need to preserve them as vital stopover points for wildlife during seasonal migrations.
